Monday plans

I am going to show a couple examples of real life problems on united streaming before the students finish their project. The students will present their project on Tuesday, unless their group is ready to go on Monday. They have the rubric and should be working on parts of it this week-end. I am excited to see the presentations because I have seen many great ideas brewing and forming on posters the last two days.

Reminder-I have tutoring on Wednesday and Thursday morning this week.

The project is due on Monday; however; they will have 45 minutes to put it together with their partner and prepare to present it.  New connection schedules will come out next Monday.  Report cards will come home October 13th.  Please sign it and have your student return it by Friday.  Have a great week-end!

The homework is to work on your poster project.  Make sure you have the notes ready for the real-life problems and the properties.

Integer Project Due Monday

Today, we began our culminating project.  I made an example for the students to look at and we went over the directions completely.  The students picked a partner or chose to work alone.  We will spend 100 minutes on the project tomorrow plus the week-end and 50 minutes Monday.

Many good ideas and themes were created for the section of the poster that requires three real-life problems using rational numbers.  Ideas ranged from professional golf tournaments to restaurant entrepreneurship to best phone plans.

I am excited to see the finished product.  If your child needs poster paper, parents can now get poster paper from our library.

The next unit is patterns and variables.  Look for the parent letter describing this unit on Monday.  I will send it home with your child.

Unit Essential Question:  How can I use algebra to represent patterns and relationships?

October 6th, 2010

Today, we went over the final and answered questions to problems that students missed.  Notebooks will be checked today and Thursday.

*The project will begin Thursday and is due on Monday.  Many students will finish Friday.  We will spend the next two days on the project.  The students can chose to work alone or with a partner.

October 5th, 2010

Today, we reviewed for the final and took the final.  I will have the finals graded and we will go over the problems tomorrow.  Tomorrow, we begin the poster project.  I will hand out directions plus the rubric for scoring the project.

*The notebook check was postponed until tomorrow.  I gave out the slips for checking off the items, so you can use it to organize your binder if you want to check and make sure it is organized correctly.  If you already did that, you have no homework.

October 4th, 2010

We reviewed for the math final that the students will take tomorrow.  We went over a checklist of what is required in the notebook check tomorrow.  The students were given a study guide and we went over the problems.  We practiced several problems for each concept in the unit.  We will go over more problems and answer any questions students have at the beginning of class tomorrow.

*We will begin the poster project on Wednesday.

*My new homework policy will begin Monday, October 9th.  I will not accept late work unless there is an absence or the student gives me two cats cash for a late homework pass.  It is important that students are responsible for getting their work in on time.  If you have any questions about the new policy, please contact me.  Thank you.

October 1st, 2010

*Today, we took the vocabulary quiz and summarized lessons of the week with some visual aids.
(Tim and Moby clips on associative, distributive, and commutative properties)

The students went over a graded sheet on distributive property and asked any questions they needed to in order to understand the problems they missed.  We worked on distributive property problem sheet 1-4.  We also talked about "order of operations".  (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally)

**Homework is to make sure you have completed Distributive handout 1-4, plus any corrections on handout 1-7.  There are a handful of students who have not turned in investigation 3.3 and 4.3.  Those were done in class earlier this week.  For those that didn't finish, you had an extra day to turn it in.

*Look Ahead:

The students will continue to review the properties and combining "like terms" on Monday.  We will also look at some more translation problems.  Many students remember translation from last year.  There will be a study guide for the final given on Monday.  They can take it home to study for the final on Tuesday.  We will go over the answers.

*What's Next?

After the final Tuesday, they will have a culminating activity that comprises of a group poster project.  They will have time to work on this in class Wednesday and Thursday.  It counts as a test grade.
